Please keep in mind that this is just a simple step-by-step example and by no means should you only use this as your guide in building your own solar panel especially if you are just beginning DIY projects or if this is your first homemade solar panel.  To reiterate use this as a guide when planning your own project.

Build Your Own Solar Panel Step #1:

  • Purchase a small solar panel that is at least 12 Volts.  A 16 Volt solar panel is preferable for this example.
  • Find a solar panel of this voltage shouldn’t be too difficult to attain.  Try your local RV store or a small marina to find your solar panel.

Step #2:

  • The next thing you need is a battery to store the energy you’ll be receiving from your solar panel.  A small rechargeable battery is sufficient for this example and a 12 Volt lead or acid battery is good enough.  What you are specifically looking for is a deep cell battery as they are built more for constant and continuous use.

Step #3:

  • Another necessary you’ll need is a battery box.  This is to ensure protection from the battery and its power just in case you are working in small areas or have little ones playing around.  The battery box is there for your protection and is highly recommended.

Step #4:

  • The next thing you should look into is a DC meter so you can convert the solar energy from the panel and utilize it to power sources around your house.  You’ll want to make sure your DC meter matches the voltages of the battery and a DC input.
  • If you plan to power AC appliances you’ll need an inverter for this.

Step #5:

  • At this step you’ll begin to start actual work into your solar panel.  In this step you are going to attach your meter and DC input to the top end of the battery box. Use your handheld drill to do this.  Then, take some insulated wire to connect the meter to the battery.
  • Be sure to work only with one wire at a time and to connect the first wire to the negative input first.  Then, use the same method to connect the DC inlet and the solar panel to the battery.

Step #6:

  • Your solar panel is now ready to start absorbing the sun’s power and converting it to usable energy.  Take the lid and close it tight with a cord and then put the entire finished product into where the sun can reach it.  Give it about eight hours to bask in the sun to collect energy.

Step #7:

  • Enjoy, you now have homemade solar energy!
